My name is Andy Ross. I am “Mr. Health Insurance” of Nevada, and I am the “pajama-man.”

You may ask, “What do you mean, the “pajama-man?” Well, let me give you my background, and, then, you will know the “how,” “why,” and “when” of the “pajama-man” title.

I had been working from my home since December 1992. From 1992 until 2004, I was a successful telecom reseller, earning a great residual income. But, the bottom fell out. When the telephone rates decreased over the years, the telecom industry melted down. My telecom residuals were going south. The “pajama-man” was in trouble. Big trouble. The thought of going out and looking for a job was terrifying. I knew that if I worked for someone else, I could never earn the kind of money that my family needed for a good education and their present lifestyle. Also, after working at home in my own business for 12 years, I did not think I was employable.

I faced the hard truth; I needed a new career; I had to find a job. I thought about it. What kind of job did I want? Eventually, the answer came in the form of health insurance. Health insurance is a business that could keep me in my work-at-home mode and pay me residual income.

From studying the literature, I eventually, knew that I could create a successful format. And, I did! Anyone familiar with business knows the franchise model makes perfect sense. You take a successful business, create a system of operation, back it up with demographic and site research, set a supply chain in place and sell (or franchise) these businesses to new business owners (or franchisees). The concept is good. Opening a franchise works, as proven by many who are making money in franchising today. A good strategy in franchising is purchasing a franchise that has been open for a period of time. This way you not only have a track record of the brand but also of the specific location.

One bad franchising note is to be wary of the oversell. Most franchisors have refined sales efforts and lots of bells and whistles that give the impression that the franchise is fool-proof. However, you will notice that there are no written guarantees of success. While this is true of everything in the business world, the implication often times in the sales pitch is that your success is all-but-a-sure-thing. Don’t fall prey to hearing only what you want to hear. Objectively review the opportunity being sure the franchisor has a track record of delivering on their promises.

Buying a Franchise – The Value of a Franchise Consultant

Since I am a franchise consultant/broker, some may dismiss this article as biased. However, the main point that I am trying to address on this page is to analyze the actual dynamic of searching for a franchise and the realistic value franchise consultants bring to the process.

When searching for a franchise, entrepreneurs often come across various franchise consultants and wander: “Why should I use their services?” The answer is simple: “To save time and money.” Franchise consultants may not provide a total solution, but their services usually come at no cost and they regularly spend hours interacting with people who buy and sell franchises, making them a good source of information

It is rare to for anyone to actually know a franchise consultant before seriously starting their search. Plus, there are just not that many franchise consultant around. It is a niche profession that was born from the franchisors’ constant thirst for more qualified candidates. The first time people start hearing about the franchise consultants is when they actually start searching for a franchise.

Just like in any service profession, there are all kinds of franchise consultants out there. Some spend hours a day studying franchises and doing research on behalf of their clients, constantly looking to learn and improve their resources. Others spend little time learning and more time steering people towards the companies that they know will pay the highest commission. Some work with ten companies, some represent hundreds. It is not, and never should be, a secret that the majority of franchise consultants work on commissions paid by the franchise companies. Consultants, or brokers, provide their information at no cost with a plan to pass along a qualified candidate to the Franchisor. That does not make them any less useful. Many consultants compare their business to that of corporate recruiters who spend their time talking to hundreds of people in search of the right candidate.

My advice to someone looking for a franchise is to explore every option available. This includes utilizing the services of a franchise consultant. In the same manner I would advise anyone to use the services of a good lawyer and accountant during their search. Not using a consultant will not save the franchise shopper any money that is for sure. Legally, a candidate can’t cut a consultant out of a deal with a franchise they were referred to, similar to the way some people undercut (bypass) real estate agents.

I suggest thinking of a franchise consultants as a tool in a Swiss knife. They may not work for every job, but are definitely well suited for a quite a few. They may not be able to find the “right” business. Candidates may not like what they have to say or the companies they refer them to. However, it is very likely that they know a good deal about franchising and can provide a volume of useful information. At the very least, a franchise consultant will educate potential franchisee on the process and will help sort our businesses they do not want. That is a great start within itself.

If a candidate is serious about buying a franchise and approaches the process thoroughly, the information they obtain will definitely help them become a better buyer. As long as candidates remain pragmatic through the process, the information franchise consultants can provide will help them save time and money. In the end, the choice belongs to the candidate. Franchise buyers are responsible for the due diligence, analysis and, of course, their money. However, understanding what franchise consultants do and utilizing them as a tool in a franchise search process can be very valuable, indeed.

Don’t want to re-join the military or work for one of those “military contractors” who send you to who knows where? How about staying right here in the good ole USA?

Ever miss being on a “Recon Mission” and the possibility of what lies ahead? Missing the constant adrenaline rush and time feeling like it is going a million miles an hour?

I can tell you that I certainly missed it and sought to find something to do for a living that would fulfill that need for adventure and excitement. The military life can have some extremely exciting times and for me, it was one of the most exciting times of my life! There is nothing like running to the bomb shelter from an incoming Scud missile! Scary…but exciting at the same time.

But after you get out of the service, you are not faced with a lot of opportunity to enjoy your work and have a little excitement in what you do. There are many ho-hum jobs out there and don’t get me wrong, they are absolutely necessary, but they are about as much fun as an enemy interrogation.

You didn’t serve your country to end up with a dull job that makes you feel like you are contributing nothing to society. And you expected more out of life after all you did for this country.

Military Veterans know a little about “wildlife”. But that is not the type of “wildlife” that we work with every day. There is an exciting career opportunity working with wildlife that you probably don’t know about.
